Daytime Shift

“Brrzz, Brrzz, Brrzz”, the morning alarm buzzed

He didn’t want to wake up, but he had to, for his livelihood

He went through the same motions that he perpetually does

Getting dressed and ready was in itself, a chore at best

But chores had to be done, for a mouth to be fed

He droned towards the office, like million others did

“Clickety-clack, click, clickety-clack”, sounded off the keyboard

He didn’t want to type the report, but he had to, for his paycheck

He went through the same motions that he perpetually does

Reporting and getting an earful for it, was second nature to him

But reports had to be done, for a mouth to be fed

He droned away at the report, like million others did

“Ping, ping, ping”, sounded off his phone

He opened the emails, half hopeful, half lost of hope

He went through the same motions that he perpetually does

Wanting to do his dream job, he had been yearning for it

But a normal job had to be done, for a mouth to be fed

He buzzed through the rejection mails, as he always did
